8 Years For Drink Driving Killer

A drink driver who crashed his car at 160mph and killed a young mother has been jailed for 8 years.

The driver, Martin Grant was breathalysed at the scene of the crash and found to be twice over the legal drink driving limit.

The tragic accident occurred on the M62 Motorway in Manchester, between junction 11 and the Eccles interchange.

Grant’s Audi S3 car ploughed into a lorry at 160mph.

His car hit the lorry with such force that it (the lorry) overturned and slid long the motorway.

The mother of 1, Joetta Shumba, tragically died at the scene of the accident. She was a passenger in Grant’s car at the time of the accident.

Grant was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court, where he had previously entered a guilty plea to causing death by dangerous driving. He also pleased guilty to drink driving.

During the sentence hearing, the court heard that Grant had been taken to hospital following the accident. The court was also told that he had tried to leave hospital during his treatment before police officers stopped and arrested him.

Pc Paul Joynson, of the GMP serious collision investigation unit, said: “Martin Grant’s recklessness and idiocy has left a young boy to grow up without his mother and taken a treasured friend and family member away from her loved ones.

“At the time of this collision, not only was he over twice the legal alcohol limit but he was driving at a ridiculous speed. He hit the lorry with such force that it tipped over and the driver thought he was going to die.

“His attempts to evade justice by trying to leave the hospital to the detriment of his own health to avoid being arrested would suggest that his only concern was himself.

“Although the sentence passed here today won’t bring Joetta back, I hope it will allow her family to start to rebuild their lives.”

As well as receiving an 8 year prison sentence Grant was also disqualified from driving for 6 years.
